Things to Do

Coming in from out of town? Here are a few of our favorite restaurants and activities for pre- or post-wedding exploring.

Torrey Pines Hike

12600 N Torrey Pines Rd. La Jolla, CA 91910
The Guy Fleming Trail in Torrey Pines State Natural Reserve is an easy, <1 mile loop trail. It typically takes about 30 - 45 minutes to complete. The trail is relatively flat and provides scenic ocean views.

Tacos El Gordo

556 Broadway Chula Vista, CA 91910
No contest — these are the best tacos in Southern California. Expect 15–20 minute lines at peak times; each meat has its own serving line, so double-check you’re in the right one. After you pick up tacos, chiles, and grilled onions, load up at the salsa and toppings bar, then pay at the central register (it can be hard to spot when busy). Worth the wait.

Balboa Park

1549 El Prado, San Diego, CA 92101
Balboa Park is home to 17 different museums, theaters, and gardens. Katie’s favorite spots are the Timken Museum of Art and the Botanical Garden (both of which are free admission btw). Even if you’re not a museum lover, the historical Spanish-style architecture and scenic grounds are a great place for a relaxing walk and people-watching.

Sushi Deli

228 West Washington St. San Diego, CA 92103
Sam’s favorite spot — a local sushi restaurant with three equally great locations. Parking can be a little tricky at each spot, but the fresh sashimi, creative raw and cooked rolls, and relaxed atmosphere keep us coming back.

Seaport Village

849 West Harbor Dr. San Diego, CA 92101
Great for a relaxed stroll, souvenir shopping, or a casual harbor‑view bite; best visited early morning or late afternoon to avoid crowds. Free live music typically plays weekends from about 11:00 AM–4:00 PM at the food court or lighthouse stages.

Cocina 35 Brunch

A photo‑op spot with genuinely good food—both the Coronado and Liberty Station locations are great. Enjoy walking around nearby shops and scenic views. We recommend the chilaquiles, aguas frescas, or french toast. Make a reservation in advance as waits can be very long.

The Lafayette Hotel

2223 El Cajon Blvd. San Diego, CA 92104
If you go nowhere else, go here. This historic hotel looks unassuming from the outside but is a must‑visit. Inside you’ll find a funky lobby bar, a 24‑hour diner, a jazz club, a poolside lounge, a mezcalería/restaurant, and a billiards-and-bowling cocktail room—plenty of spots to relax, grab a drink, or keep the fun going.
